The Color Run, London 2013

Squeezed in amongst my “official” runs for 2013, was the Color Run, in Wembley, north-west London. The Color Run (argh, American spelling is driving me crazy!) markets itself as “The Happiest 5k” and I certainly had a good time…

The Top 5%

Back in January 2013 I made a New Year’s resolution to run four races in the four countries of the United Kingdom, all in aid of Mind– the mental health charity.

My wonderful dad became increasing unwell in 2012 with severe depression and running lots of miles helped to channel my uselessness, increase awareness for the 1-in-4 of us that will suffer a mental health problem in any given year and raise money for a charity I was finding useful for support and advice…

The race that wasn’t, Galway 2013

So having backed out of the Edinburgh Marathon, I was aiming to run the Causeway Coastal Marathon in September to meet my Northern Ireland and my marathon target before the end of 2013. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.

I’d been running with a niggle in my thigh for a few months and being the sensible medical professional that I am, I’d ignored it. However, during Run to the Beat in August, I really felt my leg giving me trouble. Speeding up, slowing down, having to stop mid-race a few times in bottle-necks had all made things ache a bit more than usual. The day after, I was…

Run to the Beat, London 2013

And then came Run to the Beat. I had high hopes for RTTB:

  1. After the lonely roads of Coll, I was looking forward to a big race, with spectators and support.
  2. I love running around London, and the route promised a lot…

At the start of 2013 I made a New Year’s resolution to run four races in the four countries of the United Kingdom, all in aid of Mind– the mental health charity. I had originally planned to run the Edinburgh Marathon in May, but succumbed to summer flu and a bout of tonsillitis two weeks before race day and spent a week convalescing in this pretty cool gypsy caravan instead. Bramble Bield is…

The Island Race/Ras yr Ynys, Anglesey 2013

After a rather unsporting 2012, I got back on the running in 2013. I made two New Year’s resolutions: one not to travel by aeroplane (after 20-something flights the year before, I felt the o-zone would thank me for taking a break) and one to run four races in the four countries of the United Kingdom, all in aid of Mind– the…

What happened in 2012

So, whilst 2012 was a bumper year for sport in London, with the Olympics and Wimblebobs and such, it was not so much for me. I must have been doing some occasional jogging, I remember buying new trainers after a break-up (oh yes, the old “I’ll show him what he’s missing” trick, in my lycraed thighs and shiny new NewBalancers) but apart from that, my 2012 was a whirlwind of holidays and four months off work! I’d made a resolution that year to go on a holiday every month, kind of a precursor to this year’s race per month and with distinctly more relaxation in mind. I was also pretty unhappy with my job, worried about my unwell dad and taking time out of life to figure what I wanted to…

Royal Parks Foundation Half, 2011

After my success of the Great Scottish Run (yes it was hard, exhausting and slow, but I finished it and I have the medal to prove it), I started to run a lot more. Although I enjoyed running then, I was still quite self-conscious about my lack of speed, excess volumes sweat and incredibly reddened face and used to run only in the dark. I was living in Harrow…

The Great Scottish Run, 2010

The Great Scottish Run was my first competitive run, that I mostly did to help raise some money for an amazing charity called XLP, that my friend set up and now runs in inner-city areas across London. I grew up in Scotland, but moved to London earlier in 2010 and the idea of running…

My first competitive run, in September 2010

There I am, all smiles and waving at the camera in my XLP  t-shirt, on my first competitive run- little did I know it was the start of something more..
